‘Swim to Me’ – An interview with Dham Srifuengfung

Dham Srifuengfung was born in Thailand but grew up in England. The young photographer now resides in London and already got his work published in well-known magazines such as Vogue Hommes, Another Man and 1 Granary. Having a multi-disciplinary background in architecture, photography and cinematography Dham has a profound understanding of those artistic disciplines. Well, he surely knows how to make the best use of his diverse education and creates photographs that are fun, colourful and simply wonderful.
Hi Dham, how would you describe your work or photography style?
That is a really difficult question to answer. I think that my work should mean different things to different people as they will definitely mean something else to me.
You studied architecture in your Bachelors and then photography and cinematography in your Masters. What do you enjoy doing more?
Architecture will always inform what I do, what I studied was more of a practice rather than a subject. I have learnt so much from it and I will never forget it. I will definitely make a film someday. I love the movement, the dialogue, the storytelling aspect of it; and I feel like that sound is really important. It draws you into the work and we sort of live it for a short time and that’s kind of wonderful.
You were doing fashion shoots for Vogues Hommes, Another Man, but also a Gucci Special for Vogue Thailand. What fascinates you about fashion?
I’m not sure I would say I’m fascinated by fashion. I like how clothes can make you feel. It’s a really easy way to relate to other people I think.
Now, let’s talk a bit about your series ‘Swim to Me’. What is that one about?
Swim to Me is a really fun series about love and attachments.
Please elaborate more on it, especially about the ones you did in Bangkok with the lovely Asian lady and the guy who we only can see from the back.
That would be my lovely nanny and the guy is a friend of mine who is a dancer. My nanny has been with my family for more than thirty years, even before I was born! I wanted to make her look strong and beautiful.
Where did you draw inspiration for that series from?
The starting point is never research for me–It’s so much more spontaneous. I just try to take as many photographs as I can and often a connection will fall into place later.
What else have you planned for this year?
I’m not sure yet, there are so many things I want to shoot but hopefully good things!
